What does the brand name “Hyundai” mean in Korean? And what’s the significance of the Hyundai logo? If you’ve wondered what the answer is to either of these questions, visit Planet Hyundai in Golden, or contact us to learn more!
“Hyundai” translates to “modernity” in English, and has been the name of the company since it was originally founded as the Hyundai construction company in 1947, in South Korea. “New Thinking, New Possibilities” is the current Hyundai Motor Company slogan, chosen to align with the name and the overall company mission.
Most in the United States pronounce Hyundai in a way that rhymes with Sunday, and no one would tell you that’s an incorrect pronunciation. But don’t be alarmed if others say it differently: In the U.K., British people and commercials pronounce the brand “high-UN-dye,” just as an example.
The silver, modern-looking Hyundai logo is clearly a letter “H,” which makes sense for obvious reasons. However, its lean to the right was a less-obvious detail added by the company to suggest active motion, rather than a passive lean to the left. While that might be the logo’s big message, the logo also is supposed to look like the silhouette of two people shaking hands, representing the Hyundai commitment to customer satisfaction and teamwork while invoking the classic image of a salesperson and a shopper striking a deal. The silver oval encircling the hand-shakers may symbolize the global expansion of the car brand.
